A Day in Downtown Memphis with Kids

With great nightlife, awesome entertainment and delicious food, it is easy to assume that downtown Memphis is more of an adults-only part of town, but you would be mistaken. We had a fun family morning visiting the Peabody Ducks, strolling down Beale Street and avoiding yummy brain freeze at A. Schwab’s.

How did the tradition of the ducks in The Peabody Memphis fountain begin? ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Back in the 1930s, after a few too many, some guys thought it would be funny to place some of their live duck decoys in the beautiful Peabody fountain. They let three ducks swim around and people thought it was awesome. The rest is history!⠀⠀

Throw in some serious pomp and circumstance, a Duck Master and front red carpet seats for the kiddos and you have some adorable fun in the making. The March of the Ducks is a must see in downtown Memphis. The March of the Ducks is a must see in Memphis.

Our next stop was a beautiful Mississippi riverboat for one of the coolest tours we’ve ever been on. We climbed aboard the Mississippi Queen II, a steamboat that has been cruising the river since the 1950s.

Our tour guide was so much fun. He told the most interesting stories about life on the river and the history of the area. I’ve never been on a 90-minute tour that kept me engaged the entire time. This one did! The views of the are are beautiful too.

Just across the pier, we found the most adorable seaside-themed playground. My kiddos burned off tons of energy running through the big fish.

We knew we couldn’t visit Memphis and not check out Beale Street. I mean, that is Memphis, right?!? Well, it didn’t disappoint. It was so fun to stroll down the open street and see the places where music legends used to and still do make history.

We ended the day at A. Schwab’s, an authentic mercantile experience, and the last remaining original business on the street. You can take home a cool souvenir and some super yummy ice cream.

I’d love to hear about your family fun in Memphis!
