Are you ready for Spring? I know I am. Today, we got a little taste of the Spring life at Homestead Gardens in Severna Park, Maryland. We went for the mid-morning workshop on birdseed wreath making and we all had so much fun.
The kiddos got to get a little dirty and watch their wreath come together. The next day, we hung it on our tree and waited for the birds to arrive.
Homestead Gardens is such a fantastic store. The store has a great plant selection in the toasty warm greenhouse. Stop by for a welcome warm up during the cold winter months. The friendly staff even has complimentary coffee and tea waiting for you.
Personally, I go for the gorgeous displays full of home and garden décor. My kids love the children’s section. We found the cutest little garden tools, toys and books for my little crew.
For those of you that know me, you know I have a serious black thumb. I kill all the plants. Homestead Gardens is a great place to get gardening advice too. Pesky weeds? Creepy critters? They can help you handle it all.
This season, the greenhouse is full of stunning orchids and shamrocks as far as the eye can see.
If you’re ready to make your own birdseed wreath at home, here’s the recipe. Cardinals, Woodpeckers, Nuthatches, and Chickadees will love this.
- ½ cup of warm water
- 1 packet gelatin
- 3 tbsp. corn syrup
- ¾ cup flour
- 4 cups birdseed
- A handful of mealworms (optional)
- Bundt pan
- Cooking spray
Mix warm water and gelatin until it dissolves. Add corn syrup and mix well. Add flour, birdseed and mealworms. Mix until completely combined. Spray bundt pan with cooking spray. Dump mixture into the pan. Let cure overnight before removing from the pan. Hang at least 5 ft. from the ground to keep other critters from eating it first.
Check out all the fun we had at the workshop.
